Mid Henveiru MP Ali Azim was on Wednesday issued a summons from Maldives Police Service.

According to the lawmaker’s Twitter, the summoning order was for 12 pm on Thursday.

MP Azim, who is the deputy leader of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group, did not specify the reason for the summons.

Opposition Vaikaradhoo MP Mohamed Nazim has also received a summons to be present at Police Headquarters on Thursday at 2:30 pm.

Another opposition lawmaker, Nolhivaran MP Hussain Areef was imposed with a travel ban on Tuesday and was asked not to leave the country till the police conclude their investigation into his involvement in the disruptions that took place in front of the parliament on July 31. He is being accused of obstructing law enforcement officers.

Meanwhile, the state has levied trespassing charges against 12 additional opposition MPs for obstructing law enforcement officers and entering the parliament on July 24, when the police were barring their entry.

Jumhoory Party (JP)’s deputy leader and former commissioner of police, MP Abdulla Riyaz, was taken to the police earlier this week for questioning regarding the incident.
