How to Prepare for Your First SCUBA Dive in Maldives

Scuba Diving

The Maldives has won many hearts across the globe for being the beautiful honeymoon destination, delightful retreat and heaven on earth that it is. Of late the scope of local activities has started to increase with the nation of tiny islands rising in popularity and importance as a water sports destination where people find simple happiness in engaging in spine-chilling activities on, under or through the waves of the Indian Ocean.

Gearing Up

Before you kick-start your scuba diving career either at the professional level or recreational level, you need to get your head around all the gear and paraphernalia that will be required. As a budding scuba diver, you should ideally do some research on the different types of scuba diving equipment and the features of each type of equipment. You may also need to consider personal health concerns associated with prolonged stays in seawater when finalizing the list of equipment to be purchased. As an alternative you can rent the equipment that is required; this would essentially include an exposure protection wetsuit, a mask, an oxygen tank and fins at the very least. Most hotels have the required equipment or you could pick some up from the closest township.

Understanding the Waters

Whether the plan is to hop into the waters near Dhigali Maldives or further south of Maldives, it is important to know what to expect and whether time and tide would be on your side or not. Generally, the best season to visit Maldives for a scuba diving vacation would be between the months from November to March though it is feasible to dive during the other parts of the year as well. Peruse through the list of sea creatures and plants found in the waters such that you know what to be wary of and what to keep your eyes peeled for.

Knowing the Attractions

Coral reefs, shipwrecks and caves are among the most enchanting Maldives attractions that one would find in the seabed. It is essential that you get an idea about the depth at which each of these can be found in the waters such that you can cross check whether you would have sufficient oxygen and whether there would be sufficient light underwater for you to manoeuvre yourself around. Tropical waters typically have better visibility than those elsewhere in the world but the deeper you dwell in any kind of ocean, the more perilous it becomes.

Obtaining Guidance

There are PADI certified instructors in Maldives who would be able to teach you the basics of scuba diving and also guide you on the relatively safe places in the water for your plunge. If possible engage one to be at hand as you dive to ensure your safety. Always follow their advice as their knowledge of the local waters is impeccable and it is likely that there are unusual factors to consider in these tropical waters.

Taking the Plunge

In order to reach a suitable point in the water for diving, you need to have studied the water. Accordingly, you could either walk from the beach or take a boat to the diving point. You may need to speak to your hotel or tour company to arrange a boat to the closest diving spot or lock the services of someone who could direct you to the spot that is accessible by wading through the waters. Scan the waters before submerging yourself to be on the safe side. It is mandatory that you are able to swim in order to be able to handle a dive and you should plunge in as per the instructions provided by your guide.
