Finance Ministry reverts parliament’s decision to hike staff pay

The entrance to People’s Majlis, the parliament chamber of the Maldives.

In a turn of events, the Ministry of Finance has withheld the increased increments for the parliament’s staff.

Following reports of the parliament’s decision to promote its entire staff and hike their salary, the finance ministry on Monday asked the parliament secretariat to revert its decision.

Reportedly, the parliament had even prepared the salary slips of over 130 employees and forwarded it to the finance ministry. However, the ministry had returned the salary slips and asked to adjust it as it was before the promotions.

It remains unclear why the finance ministry reverted the parliament’s decision.

However, Mihaaru is aware that Parliament’s Speaker Abdullah Maseeh had personally informed some of the parliament’s staff of their promotion, whilst parliament’s secretariat Ahmed Mohamed had signed the rest of the promotion letters.

Neither the parliament’s secretariat, nor its speaker has commented on the issue yet.
