Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) on Sunday said that opposition Jumhoory Party (JP)’s leader Qasim Ibrahim will have to return to the Maldives on Tuesday when his leave expires.

According to a spokesperson from MCS, Qasim has been asked to return on Tuesday, since the additional 10 days that were granted to his medical leave will expire then.

Qasim is currently in Singapore, recovering from the heart surgery he had undergone last Wednesday.

His family had assured that “everything went smoothly” with the surgery and that he is stable.

The former Maamigili MP was initially given a 10-day medical leave on September 6; however, his family had immediately appealed for an extension of three months, till December 2017, after they had consulted with his doctor. MCShad at first refused the leave extension, until his lawyers filed the official medical documents, including letters from Qasim’s physician explicitly stating that his condition is critical.

Whilst Qasim’s original 10-day leave medical leave expired on September 16, the second extension will expire on Tuesday, September 26.

Neither Qasim’s lawyers nor spokespeople from his party has commented on MCS’s order to bring Qasim back, yet.
