Jailed former vice president Ahmed Adeeb is being charged for bribing intelligence officials while he was in government.
A spokesman from the Prosecutor General’s office told the Maldives Independent a case against Adeeb was forwarded to the criminal court on Tuesday. The charges are bribery and official misconduct.
According to Raajjemv, Adeeb stands accused of using his authority to influence officers in the Maldives Police Service intelligence department.
The police had forwarded the case to the PG’s office for prosecution two years ago following the investigation into the bomb attack on President Abdulla Yameen’s speedboat.
In a speech on October 25 2015, Yameen said Adeeb had been collecting intelligence reports “officially and unofficially” and that he had not been getting intelligence briefings for four months.
At the time Yameen indicated collusion between Adeeb and intelligence officials.
Adeeb is currently serving a 33-year jail sentence on multiple counts of corruption and terrorism. He was found guilty of masterminding the bomb attack, of plotting to use a firearm during an opposition protest and embezzling over US$5 million from state coffers.
