State prosecution on Wednesday submitted evidence to the Criminal Court against local business tycoon and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim.
Two forensic police officers gave statements regarding the video evidence that was submitted to the court, the MP’s lawyer said.
His lawyer further said that the trial will be held behind closed doors. No further information regarding Wednesday’s trial was revealed.
MP Qasim’s latest hearing had to be cancelled as he was hospitalised.
Meanwhile, the judiciary has also slapped a travel ban on Qasim, forbidding him from travelling abroad until the end of the trial. However, his lawyers argue that he has to leave the country for further treatment, which is unavailable in the Maldives for his heart condition.
The Maamigili MP is being tried for allegedly bribing lawmakers ahead of the censure motion against the parliament’s speaker Abdulla Maseeh in March, 2017. If found guilty, Qasim can be imprisoned for up to 12 years.
