Fewer crimes reported in 2017 than 2016: Police

There were fewer crimes reported in 2017 compared to the statistics of 2016, Maldives Police Service revealed on Tuesday.

According to statistics published by the police, there were 13,580 cases filed at the police in 2016. However, in 2017, the amount had roughly decreased to 12,745 cases.

Police’s statistics showed that most of the cases reported in 2017 were burglaries and thefts, with 3,503 cases. There were also 2,105 accidents reported, while 2,038 drug-related cases were lodged at the police last year.

Despite the decrease in reported crimes, the number of murders that took place in the Maldives in 2016 and 2017 remains the same, with six murders each year. Last year also saw the gruesome murder of blogger and human rights activist Yameen Rasheed.
