Echebaster Vessel Seeking MSC Certification Identified as IUU Fishing Violator by Maldives Ministry

The Maldives Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture conducted an assessment on the level of illegal fishing taking place in Maldivian waters based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data that was collected through satellite service providers.

Over a period of two years, a total of 432 fishing vessels were identified as engaging in “potentially illegal fishing activities.” The study also found that there were 542 “unauthorized drifting buoys deployed
