Religiously conservative Adhaalath Party has revealed that it will back a coalition government that shares its beliefs in the upcoming presidential election slated for 2018.

Adhaalath Party released a statement on Friday night stating that it would fully support a coalition that acknowledges its requisitions for the 2019 parliamentary election.

Whilst Adhaalath Party vowed to work with a coalition government in the upcoming presidential election, the party is already a part of the Maldives’ united opposition, along with the biggest opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhoory Party, and President Abdulla Yameen’s first vice president Dr Mohamed Jameel and defence minister Mohamed Nazim. Former president and the incumbent president’s half-brother Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his loyalists have also joined the new opposition coalition.

Meanwhile, former president Mohamed Nasheed has called on the united opposition to collectively nominate an interim candidate for the election. This was met with snarky criticism from the ruling party who claimed that the opposition will not be able to come to a decision regarding who to nominate. Morever, they had claimed that the Constitution does not allow for an interim presidency.

Adhaalath Party was a part of Yameen’s coalition back in the 2013 presidential election, along with Jumhoory Party and Maldivian Development Alliance (MDA).
