Maldives CPI: Rents still on the rise

It is common to hear of soaring house rents. And it could be fair to say it is the main ailment of the Maldivian social sickness.In truth, the house rents are rapidly rising.

The statistic bureau‘s monthly publications indicate that household area is where it stood highest. According to this year October month’s Consumer Price Index (CPI), within this year Malé city’s rental inflation rate rise to 0.56%. Looking at the whole of Maldives the inflation rate rose to 5.84%. However, in outer islands, this area remained the same.

Moreover, comparing this year’s September to October, house rent, water bill, electricity bill, gas and oil combined, the inflation rate rose by 0.30%.

The National Statistic Bureau says that except household rent, water, electricity, gas and oil, furniture and cutlery and utensils, travel expense, sports, cultural activities, hotel, cafe and restaurant areas, the rest fared almost the same when comparing Malé city and the rest of the islands of the Maldives.
