Ministry of Tourism Maldives together with the Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC) is planning an integrated guesthouse project in K. Kaashidhoo.
In a press conference held at MITDC on 23 November, Managing Director Mr Mohammed Shaahid said that discussion has been going on about dedicating a specific area of K. Kaashidhoo for the development of an integrated guesthouse project. He added that according to the plan 10, 25-room guesthouses with a total capacity of 250 beds, along with a restaurant and water sports area will be established.
Mr Shahid additionally mentioned that the project cost is estimated at USD 4 million and that the expenses will be collected through fundraising activities. He expects the project to be started within the upcoming months or in 2018 and for it to be completed within 6 to 8 months of initiation.
According to Mr Shahid, the main aim of this project is to provide opportunities for newcomers interested in setting up their business in guesthouse industry and the opportunity will be opened once the project is completed. The involvement of MITDC in construction and development of the project will be huge and the guesthouses will be rented to interested parties upon completion. Mr Shahid assured that further information on the project will be provided as it gets unveiled.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Ministry, Mr Hussain Lirar said that the purpose of handing over the project to MITDC is due to the fact that the company was developed to handle huge projects and as the company is the one involved in Baresdhoo project as well.
Mr Lirar further said that as soon as the land registration is sorted, it will be handed over to MITDC and that the essential works of the project have already been handed over to the company. He also said that when the land registration papers are handed over to MITDC, the physical of the project will begin.
MITDC is the company in charge of the biggest guest house project in Maldives, L. Baresdhoo. More than 30 guesthouses and 3 water villas hotels are developed on the island, with each of the hotels and guesthouses boasting a capacity of 100 beds.
