State-owned China State Construction Engineering Corp to build 7,000 units of public housing in the Maldives

State-owned China State Construction Engineering Corp will build 7,000 units of public housing in the Maldives, the largest public housing project there, Chinese media reported on Sunday.

The project is located on Hulhumale Island, an artificial island, and the total construction area is 451,900 square meters, thepaper.cn said. The Chinese company will be an engineering, procurement and construction contractor.

The value of the deal is estimated at $434 million, and the whole bidding process took half a year. The housing units will be designed according to Chinese standards after fully considering local geographical conditions, the report noted.

All construction materials such as steel and cement will be transported from China.

Yeah but if they are getting steel,cement from china what is in it for maldives apart from paying the interest rates?
