Remember When Maersk, World’s Largest Shipping Line Turned Their Attention to the Aviation Industry?

Maersk Group is well known throughout the globe as the largest container ship and supply vessel operator in the world since 1996. However, their decision in the1960s to buy out the Danish charter airline Falck Air and convert the airline to a fully commercial operation made it to the big headlines.

The Maersk Air was founded on 21 February 1969 with the purchase of Falck Air. At the time Falck Air operated a fleet of two de Havilland Herons and two Hawker Siddeley HS 748 aircraft and a hangar at Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup. Maersk also entered the travel agency industry. Originally named Maersk Air Rejsebureau, it was later anglicized to Maersk Travel. Maersk Air also bought a share of Copenhagen Airport’s ground handling company, Copenhagen Air Services, in 1972.

During August this year, Maldives State Shipping Company (MSS) announced the collaboration with the world’s biggest shipping company, Maersk. As the world’s largest container shipping company, Maersk moves 12 million containers every year and delivers to every corner of the globe.

Becoming the gateway for efficient shipping solution in the Maldives, MSS offers feeder services, liner service, NVOCC and freight forwarding. MSS was established to overcome the difficulties Maldivian traders and other businesses face in the absence of a reliable national shipping line and to provide employment opportunities for Maldivians in an industry other than tourism.
