Jailed former defence minister Mohamed Nazim was brought to state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male early on Monday for treatment.

The details of his ailment are not clear. Both his family and lawyers claimed that Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) had not informed them of bringing Nazim to the capital.

Nazim was brought to Male for treatment last July as well. However, authorities had not divulged any details at that time either.

He was shifted back to prison last March 29, after over a year of house arrest. Authorities had also shifted Nazim to house arrest for the Islamic holy fasting month of Ramadan this year.

The former minister is currently serving an 11-year sentence for weapons possessions after a pistol and three bullets were found in his residence.
