Child Abuse Crime Sexual Abuse

Police escort woman accused of enabling abuse from Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll

Maldives Police Service, on Tuesday, escorted a woman off Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll, after the island’s residents held a protest, accusing her of enabling the sexual abuse of her daughter.

The police revealed that Maafushi protestors gathered to demand action against an individual holding a ‘respectable’ position that was accused of neglect in the child abuse case.

According to local media outlet Mihaaru, residents gathered in front of Maafushi police station in connection to accusations that the mother was complicit in the sexual abuse of her underage daughter at the hands of her stepfather.

The police arrested the man in question over the sexual abuse allegations last March.

Following the stepfather’s arrest, the victim was placed under the care of her maternal relatives while the mother was barred from meeting her daughter.

A resident from Maafushi stated that people began protesting on Tuesday when the child was heard crying after being taken to her mother’s house against instructions by state authorities.

Public ire continues to soar over the government’s meagre record of arresting and convicting perpetrators of sexual offences despite several promises to do so.
