Oil tanker runs aground in Lhaviyani atoll

An oil tanker of State Trading Organisation (STO) early on Monday morning ran aground a reef near the island of Felivaru in Lhaviyani Atoll.

According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the oil tanker had set off from the island of Milandhoo in the northern Shaviyani atoll to the capital Male when the incident happened.

The boat is carrying petroleum, and has 12 people onboard, MNDF revealed.

MNDF said that it was made aware of the incident at around 6:15 a.m. on Monday and that the soldiers stationed at the northern area are currently at the scene.

MNDF’s coastguard divers have also been dispatched to support the rescue of the oil tanker.
