Ministry of Fisheries Deploys a Fish Aggregating Device

Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture announced that a Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) has been deployed on the morning of 29th August 2020.

The FAD No. 527 has been deployed 9 miles East of Th. Guraidhoo and is aimed to obtain the benefits of pole and Line Fishery. This was revealed in a tweet by the Ministry.

A fish aggregating device is an artificial object anchored or drifting in the open ocean to attract fish. Drifting FADs float with the current, collecting fish as they move across the ocean.

According to Fisheries Ministry, no other fisheries can be carried out within 3 nautical miles of this Fish Aggregating Device (FAD).

Fisheries Ministry has been increasing the number of fish aggregating devices installed to the existing network.

The devices were first installed in Maldivian waters in 1980 with the aim to increase the yield in the industry. The project has reduced the financial cost and various benefits have been brought to the industry.
