Maldives Late Season Has Been Mental

I Just spent the first two weeks of September in the Maldives and everywhere I turned local surfers and tourists were boasting the line, “You should have been here yesterday”.

You see, I arrived at beautiful Kandooma Resort, just south of the capital Male, a few days after the best fortnight of swell in the entire 2017 season.

Late August in the Maldives, both up in the North Male Atolls, the Centrals and even down south was the best it has been all year.

A solid southeast swell combined with favourable light offshore winds ensured all the left and right reefs were smooth, clean and cooking with gas every day for two consecutive weeks.

Surfing World Magazine editor Vaughan Blakey said, “ I scored the best trip of my life, surfing 6-8 foot Jails, Cokes and a secret session not too far from Male.” (See his perfect barrel sequence here)

Kandooma was all time according to local guides Ali Lushan, Liuttey, Unco and co, whilst Brian and Joey James concurred that Cokes and Chickens were as good as they get in late August.

Whilst I missed the late August goodness, a staple diet of consistent 2-5 foot waves that included uncrowded Kandooma and Riptides in the 2-4 foot range for a week, followed by a second week on a The Perfect Wave charter, The Naera, surfing 2-5 foot Cokes, Chickens, Jails and Sultans was more than enough to stoke this ageing old grommet out.

Check out the photo and video evidence. Right now is the best time to book your 2018 surf trip. Check out the early bird deals that are just way too tempting.
