About 20 per cent of 3,100 divorced or separated people who were questioned in the survey had been to the sun-kissed coral isles in the Indian Ocean for their honeymoon.

It was followed in the break-up league table by Marrakech, with 17 per cent, Bora Bora, 13 per cent, Bali, ten per cent, and then Mauritius, Lapland, Santorini, Venice, Buenos Aires and Cancun.

Sam Henderson, 47, of Harrow, North-West London, who divorced five years after his post-wedding holiday in the Maldives, said: ‘We are both now happily remarried, but neither of us went back there for our second honeymoon.

‘I went to Cornwall and my ex-wife went to Edinburgh.’

The survey was carried out for a gambling comparison website, based on a list of some of the most popular, luxury honeymoon spots.
