State-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on Thursday warned that unless Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim receives urgent medical treatment for his heart condition, which is unavailable in the Maldives, the ailing lawmaker’s condition may become life-threatening.

Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim was rushed to the hospital after he suddenly fainted in the Criminal Court on Thursday afternoon, in the middle of a hearing on his bribery charge.

According to a document signed by Dr Ali Shafeeq, IGMH’s Senior Consultant in Cardiology, which was uploaded to Twitter by former Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, MP Qasim is urgently referred abroad for an “EPA + RFA” heart surgery.

“Further delay, may result in life threatening arrhythmia. As this facility is not available here, patient is urgently referred abroad,” read the document.
