Maldives Police Service revealed on Sunday that they have expunged over 15,000 criminal records since the regulation on keeping criminal records was amended and gazetted last Wednesday.
The new amendment allows the police to expunge misdemeanours from the criminal records of individuals seeking employment.
“This is actually a pretty big decision,” police spokesperson Superintendent Ahmed Shifaan said. “A lot of people have trouble finding jobs because they have minor criminal records. This will be very beneficial for the youth.”
The new amendment allows the police to clear criminal records if the individual has not repeated the same offence for at least three years since going on record.
However, the amendment does not allow serious crimes such as any form of child abuse, assault or rape to be cleared from the offender’s record.
In 2014, in an effort to increase employment opportunities for the youth, the police had obliterated over 1,000 criminal records.
