The new tertiary hospital being developed in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale will provide the national healthcare scheme of Aasandha, proclaimed Minister of Health Nazim Abdulla.
Speaking to reporters after a tour of the nearly completed Tree Top Hospital last Thursday, Minister Nazim confirmed that Aasandha insurance will also be available to patients from the new hospital.
“We give Aasandha to [Maldivian patients in] foreign hospitals; why shouldn’t it be available from this hospital?” said Minister Nazim, adding that it is too early to determine the percentage of services Aasandha will cover at Tree Top Hospital for now.

The minister declared that the new tertiary hospital will see the beginning of a range of new treatments yet unavailable in the Maldives, which in turn will minimize the number of Maldivians going abroad for medical reasons. The state-of-the-art services include procedures such as open heart surgeries, cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, kidney dialysis, and MRI and CT scans to name a few, said Minister Nazim.
“Prominently, we note that this hospital is fully prepared for patient catering, emergencies, and inpatient and outpatient services,” he said as he joyfully highlighted that several Maldivian youths are also receiving training to work in Tree Top Hospital.
According to the health minister, doctors hailing from over 30 nations will be employed at Tree Top Hospital. Minister Nazim described it as a “transformational change” that will greatly ease the burden of state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male.
Reporters were given a tour of the new hospital on Thursday, revealing that all the construction and development work has been completed. Currently, the hospital is under preparation to open to the public, with machinery and equipment being installed in rooms while employees are undergoing training. The hospital, sprawling over 300,00o square metres of land, features a radiology department with all the modern machinery for various scans, special private wards for patients, employee rooms, wings for chemotherapy and kidney dialysis, heart surgery theatres, and laboratories.

Tree Top Hospital is a USD 90 million (MVR 1.3 billion) investment with 152 beds. There is also a hotel developed next to the hospital, which would provide accommodation for the staff, suites for patients and a restaurant.
The management of the hospital will be overseen by Ramsay Sime Darby Health Centre, which is a joint venture of Australia’s leading hospital operating group Ramsay Health Care and Malaysian-based multinational conglomerate Sime Darby.
Tree Top Investments’ Director Adam Saleem said that the company is working to open the new hospital within this year.
