Police arrest suspect over murder of youth in Hulhumale

Police on Sunday arrested the first suspect over the murder of a local youth in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale late on Friday night.

Haris Abdul Qafoor, 24, of Gaafu Alif atoll Dhaandhoo island, was stabbed eight times in a secluded, dead-end lane lined with trees. According to witnesses, he was attacked by men on motorcycles, and Haris was rushed to the hospital in a pickup.

Hulhumale Hospital pronounced him dead upon arrival.

The first suspect apprehended in the police’s manhunt for Haris’ killers is a 23-year-old man. Police stated that he is a prime suspect who was physically involved in stabbing Haris.

Another young man was stabbed in capital Male near the house of parliament the same night. He is currently being treated at privately run ADK Hospital.

Police have arrested 13 suspects in connection to the crime, out of whom nine are remanded for 15 days. The Juvenile Court ruled to release the other four, who are minors.

Mihaaru understands that both incidents of gang violence were acts of vengeance over a youth that was stabbed to death in Maafannu ward of Male last week.
