To induce the spirit of entrepreneurship and to empower local entrepreneurs, Dhiraagu along with UNDP and Ministry of Economic Development in partnership with Techstars have launched the first Startup Weekend in the Maldives.
Techstars Global is an international network in partnership with google that empowers young individuals to pursue their entrepreneurial dream. Startup Weekend is run by local organizers in over 700 cities and 150 countries worldwide. Techstars commitment to building communities and supporting entrepreneurs is beyond impressive.
Initiating the first Startup Weekend, the main sponsor Dhiraagu CEO Ismail Rasheed said that Entrepreneurship remains extremely close to his heart and Dhiraagu takes pride in facilitating such events in the Maldives. “I do believe that upon completion of this weekend, participants would have gained valuable opportunities and experiences throughout” Ismail added.

Speaking at the event UNDP Resident Representative Coordinator Ms Shoko Noda said that the participants will be able to experience all the aspects of starting up a business as well the challenges they might face and how to solve or mitigate these problems. She also said that she hopes to see some exciting businesses grow from this weekend.
Chief Guest Economic Ministry’s state minister Latheef said that the weekend directly aligns with the government’s policy of empowering youth and assured the gathered crowd that this just the beginning and that many more similar events are to be expected in the near future.

According to the organizers, Startup Weekend will go on in two segments. The first segment will consist of team building exercises in order familiarize themselves with each other. The second segment will consist of building up a business or a product with the help of mentors.
