Maldives National Defence Force (MDF) has rescued the oil tanker that ran aground a reef in Lhaviyani atoll on Monday morning.

MNDF revealed that the State Trading Organization (STO)’s oil tanker was rescued with the help of another boat from the state-run company.

The boat ran aground a reef near the island of Felivaru in Lhaviyani atoll at around 6:15 a.m. when it was en route to the capital Male from the island of Milandhoo in the northern Shaviyani atoll, MNDF had said.

The oil tanker had 12 people on board, and was carrying petroleum.

MNDF has not yet revealed the damages caused to the boat, or the reef due to the accident.

If the reef is damaged, STO could potentially face heavy fines.
