The state on Sunday converted the travel clinic established in the Greater Male’ region into a flu clinic, as the need for a clinic to treat tourists reduced in the wake of travel restrictions now imposed on those incoming to the Maldives.
Health Protection Agency (HPA) established a total of three clinics in Male’ area on March 11 to control the spread of COVID-19 in the country. The travel clinic, specialised for those who developed flu-like symptoms within a two-week period after travelling from a foreign country, was set up behind Male’ Hiyaa 2 in the capital.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) announced that this clinic had now been converted to a flu clinic, providing services to both locals and foreigners from 1000hrs to 2200hrs every day of the week.
IGMH further requested all patients who develop flu-like symptoms to seek treatment at the flu clinics instead of consulting at hospitals.
In addition to the aforementioned clinic, a similar medical facility also operates from Senahiya. Moreover, a flu clinic specialised for foreigners is established at reclaimed suburb Hulhumale’.
As a safety precaution against the spread of COVID-19, the Maldivian government declared a state of public health emergency on March 12, under which travel restrictions were implemented, in addition to shutting down government institutions, schools, colleges and universities.
Moreover, a curfew was announced from 1700hrs to 2000hrs every day, in Male’, Vilimale’ and Hulhumale’.
Presently, Maldives records 19 confirmed and four active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 15 recoveries. While there are two confirmed cases of Maldivians, no local to local transmissions have been recorded.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 1,203,966 people and claimed over 64,788 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 891,876 people have recovered.
