COVID-19: Maldives death toll rises to 67

Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Wednesday, announced the 67th COVID-19 related death in the Maldives.

As per the agency, a 66-year-old Maldivian male was brought to IGMH Emergency in an unresponsive state. He was declared dead at 12 hrs.

This marks the 67th local to have succumbed to the virus in the Maldives. The remaining fatalities consist of seven expatriates, including six Bangladeshi nationals and one Filipino citizen.

Currently, the island nation records a total of 24,709 virus cases of which 2,857 are active cases, in addition to 21,155 recoveries and 67 deaths.

After a long period of recording low numbers towards the end of 2020, Maldives is now experiencing its third wave of the pandemic, with the introduction of the United Kingdom’s highly contagious virus variant.

With the sudden spike in numbers, HPA introduced a new curfew, which prohibits civilians from roads and public spaces between 2300 to 0430 hrs.
