The United States of America (USA) on Wednesday donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) sets worth USD 150,000, to support frontliners of the Maldives’ COVID-19 response.

US Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) to Sri Lanka and Maldives Martian Kelly handed the items over to the Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Omar Razak.

“The United States is proud to provide protection for Maldivian healthcare workers as they care for Maldivians suffering from COVID-19”, said DCM Kelly.

“This equipment will help prevent the spread of the virus and keep our frontline responders safe”.

This marks the third donation of PPE to Maldives gifted with funding from the US Department of Defense.

Prior to this, the US government also extended a grant of USD 2 million as economic support for the Maldives, intended to help expand social protection services through civil society and support the government’s strategy for recovery amidst the ongoing pandemic.

In addition to the US, Maldives has received foreign aid for its COVID-19 response from various other countries, including China, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Japan, India and Bangladesh.

The Maldives currently records a total of 3,103 positive cases out of which 676 are active cases. Till date, the country recorded 2,397 recoveries and 15 fatalities.
