Maldives Extends State of Public Health Emergency Until January

In relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, the State of Public Health Emergency in the Maldives has been extended until 4th January 2021.

The State of Public Health Emergency, which has been in effect since 12 March 2020, was announced to be extended last night, signed by Health Minister Ahmed Naseem.

According to Minister Naseem, the Director-General of Public Health advised him that the threat of a severe outbreak needs to be further lowered and that certain measures are still needed to be taken to ensure the health and safety of the citizens.

As of 6 pm on 5th December 2020, there have been a total of 13,159 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives. Of this, 12,264 have recovered, while 841 are still active cases. There have been 47 deaths in relation to the virus thus far in the country, and 79 patients are currently in hospitals.
