The Maldives is a country experiencing a new, more dangerous strain of the Covid-19 pandemic, says Doctor at the National Center for Respiratory Medicine at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Mohamed Ali.
In a Twitter post late Friday, Dr Mohamed revealed that ongoing is definitely a new strain that looks far more infective and affects the lungs “more vigorously”. Upon infection of the new strain patients could possibly deteriorate faster, the doctor stressed.
With this being said Dr Mohamed has urged the public to pay more heed to Covid-19 restrictions in place including reducing contact bubbles, strictly adhering to the face mask mandate as well as maintaining hand hygiene.
Definitely a new strain. Looks more infective. Affecting the lungs more vigorously. Deteriorates faster.

This comes at a time the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) earlier announced the possibility of a new Covid-19 strain spreading nationwide should the daily infections being reported surge.
Authorities are currently awaiting results for samples sent abroad to test for the new variant.
In recent days the Maldives has been experiencing devastating surges in Covid-19 case numbers as well as deaths, of which 10 have been reported this ongoing month. On Thursday Maldives observed seven deaths whereas two more deaths have been confirmed over the past 24 hours.
Cases soared above 700 on Friday as well, with active cases increasing to over 8,000. Currently, hospital admissions are also beyond 200.
