Maldives condemns multiple attacks on Saudi Arabia

The Maldivian government, on Sunday, strongly condemned attempted ballistic missile attacks targeted towards Riyadh, and multiple aerial attacks targeted towards Saudi Arabia on 27 and 28 February.

In the statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the attacks which appeared to target civilian areas and infrastructure were described as “deliberate and systematic acts of terrorism”.

Additionally, the statement asserted that the attacks confirmed the high level of threat to the stability of the region.

“Continuation and surge of such attacks indicate the urgent need for constructive engagement by the parties concerned to find peaceful solutions to the conflicts in the region”, read the statement.

Furthermore, Maldives also reaffirmed its solidarity with the government and citizens of Saudi Arabia, reiterating its commitment to fighting against all forms of terrorism.

On Sunday, Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels claimed responsibility for the attempted strikes that targeted the Saudi Arabian capital and other regions.

A Saudi-led military coalition, which has been supporting the Yemeni government against the rebels since 2015, revealed that it had averted a Huthi ballistic missile targeting Riyadh on Saturday.

According to Saudi’s state-run Al-Ekhbariya television, there were no casualties even though fragments of the missile scattered over several Riyadh neighbourhoods, damaging at least one home.

The coalition also disclosed that it intercepted six Huthi drones targeting Saudi Arabia, including the southern cities of Khamis Mushait and Jizan.
