Health Centres of Molhadhoo and Vashafaru in Haa Alif Atoll on Thursday placed two individuals who travelled to the islands under home isolation.
According to Vashafaru Council Vice President Abdulla Rauf, that a woman who travelled to Vashafaru on a domestic flight to the atoll was identified as a close contact of the first positive case of COVID-19 in the capital city Male’, while the individual who journeyed to Molhadhoo had travelled on the flight with the close contact.
The two individuals were placed under monitoring until the Health Protection Agency (HPA) finish deliberating over the matter.
As per Molhadhoo Health Centre Spokesperson Ahmed Ashraf, HPA is yet to decide a course of action for the two.
National Emergency Operations Centre is yet to disclose additional details regarding the matter.
Maldives recorded its first confirmed case of COVID-19 from the capital city, Male’, on Wednesday morning involving a local woman who presented to the flu clinic in Malé on April 14 after developing coronavirus-like symptoms.
In response, the Greater Male’ region, including Malé City, Hulhumalé, Villimale, and Thilafushi, Gulhifalhu, was placed under lockdown for 24 hours on Wednesday. Scheduled to expire on Thursday, the measures were extended for an additional 24 hrs.
The Maldives now has 23 confirmed and seven active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 16 recoveries.
The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 2.1 million people and claimed over 141,937 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 535,455 people have recovered.
