The Surge in Cases, Government Offices Closed until 6th August

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has declared that government offices are to remain closed from 4th to 6th August 2020, as a precautionary measure against the further spread of COVID-19. The President encouraged those who are able to work from home to do so and to provide services to the public through online means.

The decision was made after the country’s coronavirus statistics started deteriorating following the removal of lockdown in July. According to latest updates by Health Protection Agency on 3rd August, the total number of confirmed cases has passed 4,200 and death have reached 18.  The country has also started inspecting establishments and closing down those who do not adhere to guidelines.

Addressing the situation, President Solih stated that going into another lockdown is not the right way for the Maldives and advised locals to wear masks when outdoors. Wearing masks have been made mandatory in Male’ City and those who do not follow this are subjected to a fine.
