Club Wamco progressed to the Quarter Final of the Club Maldives Cup 2019, for the first time in their history, winning against Stelco by a goal to nil.
It is quite surprising to know that Wamco has conquered more since they gave birth to the most competitive futsal tournament in the Maldives, in 2017. They have proved that age is just a number when it comes to skill and determination.
Wamco were out from the group stage without a win in their first tournament in 2017. However, they came much stronger in their second appearance in 2018, with big names like Ali Haafiz (Haappe) and Hassan Adhuham (Sadey) representing them. Nonetheless, they were unfortunate to end the tournament, when Dhiraagu knocked them out in the Round-of-16 clash on penalties.
Their strong determination have rewarded them more so far in this year’s tournament, as they are already one-step forward compared to their short history.
Abdulla Shaffaan (Shakaa) scored the deciding goal in the first half of the match with a quality-attacking move. He also came close to score more goals on two other occasions, but the goal post and crossbar denied his efforts.
Ali Maais (Mattu) of Stelco remained as the main threat to Wamco whole through the match. He also led numerous attacks to the Wamco’s goal, making it more dangerous for Wamco in the second half. Nevertheless, the well-organized defending by Hussain Qassan Labeeb (Hussy) remained as a barrier to them.
With the knock-out-stage goal, Shaffan’s goal tally has reached to thirteen, leaving him at the top of the leaderboard ahead of Mohamed Liyah, who won the golden boot twice, on 2017 and 2018.
