The Ambassador of the United States to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Atul Keshap, met with opposition parties on Wednesday.
Several members of the opposition coalition participated in the meeting held at Jumhoory Party’s office. The politicians discussed the current political climate of the Maldives and the government’s obstructions against opposition parties with the ambassador.
Ambassador Keshap also met with President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Tuesday. He said that he had shared the US’ perspective of the Maldives with President Yameen, stressing that the US urges to establish democracy and harmony in the archipelago.
Speaking at a Ramadan breakfast hosted at Hotel Jen in capital Male with several diplomats and politicians on the same day, Ambassador Keshap expressed hopes for lasting democracy, peace and ensured human rights for all citizens in the Maldives in the future.
