The United Nations called on the authorities of the Maldives to uphold the fundamentals of democracy in the island nation.

In a press conference, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric proclaimed that the UN is closely following the state of affairs of the Maldives and called on the government to uphold the principles of democracy and human rights accorded in the Constitution.

He urged all political leaders to hold talks and work peacefully to reach a solution for the current political upheaval in the archipelago.

Germany has also raised similar concerns and declared that the current deterioration of democracy in the Maldives does not bode well for the nation’s economic development.
