UK wishes to see democracy flourish in Maldives: Ambassador

The British Ambassador to the Maldives, James Dauris, reminded the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture and the top official appointed by the government to the all-party talks, Dr Mohamed Shainee, that the United Kingdom is a friend of the Maldives and would like to see democracy flourish in the island nation.

He made the remark in a meeting with Minister Shainee in his visit to the Maldives. In the midst of the heated political turmoil in the nation, Ambassador Dauris has met with the government as well as the opposition to acquire information about the current situation.

In a tweet posted by Shainee regarding the meeting, he stated that the UK has no interest in the self-exiled Former President Mohamed Nasheed. Dr Shainee also mentioned that Ambassador Dauris appreciated and assured support for the efforts laid by the government to strengthen democracy in the country.

Ambassador Dauris has met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim and also the leadership of opposition Jumhoory Party to take note of the party’s concerns regarding threats and hitches within the parliament for lawmakers.
