The United Kingdom on Tuesday expressed concern over the arrest of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s lawmaker son, Faris Maumoon.

Following the raid and arrest of Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon over allegedly bribing lawmakers to gain votes for the opposition lobbied motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker, the British Ambassador to the Maldives James Dauris stated in a tweet that the arrest is concerning.

“Freedom to hold government to account is a fundamental element of democracy,” he said.

Police claim to have incriminating evidence that MP Faris bribed and use undue influence on lawmakers to gather enough signatures for the opposition’s resolution to file a motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh. Faris has denied the accusations.
