Maldives Police Service has taken the Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed and Machangoalhi-South MP Abdullah Sinan to the Criminal Court on Monday morning, to be remanded.

The two recently reinstated MPs were arrested immediately after they returned to Male on Sunday afternoon, from the Velana International Airport.

The police had even announced a manhunt for the two former ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) lawmakers on February 1, after stating that it was unable to deliver the summons to them since their residing addresses were not known.

Opposition supporters are currently gathering near the Criminal Court in protest of the state’s actions, which they have deemed to be a direct contravention of the apex court’s ruling.

The two MPs were close to First Lady Fathmath Ibrahim and were involved in a lot of her charity work before they crossed the floor and joined the opposition, which resulted in them being expelled by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s disciplinary committee.

They were among the 12 parliamentarians who were reinstated in the Supreme Court’s unprecedented ruling late Thursday night, which also freed nine high-profile political prisoners.
