Mihaaru has found out that two officers of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)’s Special Protection Group (SPG) are currently under military custody.

MNDF’s Information Officer Ibrahim Azim said in an ambiguous statement that it was possible the military has taken administrative actions against officers. However, he stated that such information would not be publicly disclosed.

It remains unclear whether the two officers are under arrest or merely detained at MNDF.

Administrative actions against officers could include confiscation of mobile phones or detention in the military base.

According to credible sources, the officers are Ahmed Shaaneez and Simad Ahmed, who were formerly the bodyguards of tourism minister Moosa Zameer and former President Mohamed Nasheed respectively. Shaaneez had also served as the bodyguard of Nasheed’s wife and former First Lady Laila Ali.

The recent political upsurge in the Maldives has also seen two police officers arrested. The former Special Operations commander Hussain Saif, and another officer stationed in Haa Dhaal atoll Kulhudhuffushi island, were arrested last Thursday night over alleged attempts to incite disorder amongst the police force.
