Rights group says plans to execute three men is being done to divert attention from local politics.
Plans by the Maldives government to execute three men on death row is being done to divert attention from the tropical island nation’s political crisis, says a prominent rights group.
London-based Amnesty International disagrees with a statement by the country’s Minister of Home Affairs that the planned executions have been driven by two recent stabbing murders.
“The executions are a transparent ploy by the government to distract attention from its own woes,” Biraj Patnaik, Amnesty International’s South Asia Director, said in in a statement.
