Transparency Maldives accused Maldives Broadcasting Commission of targeting specific media and differentiating among others in violation of its obligation to create a free environment for all media outlets.

Transparency has released a press statement strongly condemning the work of the commission, stating it violates the freedom of speech and freedom of media ensured by international conventions signed by the Maldives.

Stressing that specific media outlets have been purposefully targeted with heavy fines, Transparency highlighted that it is evident that the Commission has recently been favouring a specific political ideology.

Noting the recent MVR 1 million fine of local television channel Raajje TV, Transparency mentioned that it is the first time that a local media has been fined with such a large amount under the Defamation and Freedom of Speech Act.
