Theft, robbery up in Ramadan: Police

Reported cases of street robbery increased during the month of Ramadan this year compared to 2016, Maldives Police Service’ statistics show.

According to Police, 50 cases of street robbery were reported this Ramadan while Police received 29 such reports last year within the same period.

Cases of gang robberies, street robberies and mugging had all spiked while several people were also arrested over the cases.

Police stated that they received most cases regarding burglary this Ramadan. However, this year marks a lower record with 220 cases reported compared to the 271 cases filed in Ramadan 2016.

Statistics also show that Police received 69 reports of mugging and 177 cases of traffic accidents.
