Overview

On 5 February, President Yameen Abdul Gayoom of the Maldives declared a state of emergency. Using the unfettered executive control this affords, the president ordered a blockade of the Supreme Court and the arrest of a large number of opposition members, as well as Supreme Court Justice Ali Hameed, Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. What were the events that proved the catalyst to the unfolding crisis?

This webinar will explore the causes of the Maldives crisis and what is likely to happen next. It will also assess the global dimensions of this situation and how it could impact geopolitical tensions between China and India who are both heavily involved culturally and economically with the island nation. How will the two countries deal with calls to help in resolving the crisis politically, militarily and financially?
