STELCO switches to SMS for electricity bills

State Electric Company (STELCO) decided to send their electricity bills via SMS, as a precautionary measure amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

In order to enforce social distancing and minimise direct contact, STELCO previously advised customers to pay their bills online as well.

The company noted that customers who have provided their phone numbers will receive their bills either as a text message or through STELCO’s mobile app. However, the company will deliver printed bills to the ground floor of the residence for customers who have not provided their mobile numbers.

Moreover, STELCO requested the public to register on the company’s mobile application and complete all transactions related to the bills on the app.

State-run Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) is also following a similar approach, advising customers to seek help and services online, via the company’s mobile application as well.

In an attempt to contain the spread of the virus within the country, the government has closed offices and schools in addition to instructing all individuals to practice social distancing and stay in their homes.

The Maldives now has 13 confirmed and eight active cases of COVID-19. The country recorded its first two recoveries on March 20, and the third on March 21. Two more recoveries were reported on Monday.

No Maldivians have tested positive for the virus as of yet. So far, only tourists and resort employees have confirmed infections with no local transmissions.

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected more than 382,750 and claimed over 16,578 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 102,522 have recovered.
