A 28-year old man who was stabbed in the capital is in a serious condition, hospital officials said Sunday.

The man is being treated at ADK Hospital.

“He is in a serious condition,” an ADK media official told the Maldives Independent. “We cannot give the details of his injuries because we are a service provider, and only the family can give out that information.”

He was taken to the hospital at 2:40 pm on Saturday. The attack occurred on Malé’s outer ring road, near the ruling party’s campaign hall.

According to eyewitnesses, CNM reported, he was stabbed in the chest as he rode by two men who were also on motorbikes. The attackers fled the scene.

No arrests have been made, a police spokesman said.

Earlier this month a special operation was launched to curb gang violence after the fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old boy.

There have been several stabbings – believed to be reprisals between rival gangs – in the capital and Addu City during the past few months.

Ahead of September’s presidential election, the home ministry announced it would no longer be tagging youths as they were “responsible and decent.” President Abdulla Yameen had previously made false claims about a drop in violent crime rates.

There have been 53 cases of assault reported in October so far.
