SO police dispatched to Sri Lankan Embassy for security detail

Maldives Police Service’s Special Operations (SO) on Monday began dispatching officers to the Sri Lankan embassy in capital Male’ to tighten security on the premises.

Police spokesperson revealed that the dispatches were in relation to the terrorist attacks that occurred in Sri Lanka on April 21 and the following unrest in the country.

However, further details were not disclosed.

A number of other embassies also requested security details and Police were dispatched near the embassies’ premises. Included amongst the embassies are the Indian High Commission, Bangladesh High Commission, and China High Commission. The security details on their premises are being fulfilled by general police officers.

As a result of the Easter attacks in Sri Lanka that caused the deaths of over 250 citizens, religious turmoil arose in the country and Lankan police and army were dispatched to the streets to maintain stability.

Notably, the religious attacks targeting Muslim households in Sri Lanka are also a fear faced by Maldivian immigrants in the country. While curfews were announced, the Maldivian Embassy is advising caution to Maldivians living in Lanka.

Police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) recently revealed that while security measures are being strengthened, there has been no intelligence of terror threats targeting the Maldives.

Furthermore, they stated that Sri Lanka has not accused any Maldivians of being involved in the Easter attacks.
