KUALA LUMPUR: One Championship’s Saiful Merican wants to promote mixed martial arts (MMA) in the Maldives.
The 29-year-old exponent, who is recuperating from a broken left hand and a dislocated right elbow following last year’s bout against China’s Chen Lei, will join forces with Maldivian muay Thai trainer, Kai for a three-day MMA camp at Fushifaru in the Maldives on June 19-21.
“I am still recovering from my last fight and still waiting for my doctor to give me a clean bill before I return to MMA. I aim to get back in the cage when One (Championship) comes to Kuala Lumpur in December,” said Saiful, a former World No 1 Muay Thai kickboxer in the 57kg category.
On his trip to the Maldives, Saiful said: “I hope with this invitation, I will be able to introduce the sport to youngsters in that country. MMA is not brutal… it teaches discipline. The sport promotes fitness and healthy living.”
The invitation also coincides with Saiful’s mission to help youths channel their inner anger into something more constructive that could be used in their future.
With over 130 fights to his name, Saiful hopes aspiring MMA fighters will join his three-day camp in the Maldives.
Saiful, who is also the Malaysian MMA Association (MASMMA) vice-president, will introduce techniques such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, judo, Muay Thai and Sanda that are used by MMA fighters, in the Maldives.
