First Male Scout Group is set to collaborate with American Center Maldives (ACM) to gather volunteers and collaborators from various NGOs for the cleaning of designated areas over a period of 1.5 to 2 hours on a weekly basis.
The project, which began efforts in February 2019, gathered a total of 902 volunteers for 3 events in March, collecting 2666.01 kilograms of trash from the capital Male’ within 2 hours.
The new clean-ups will focus on different areas in the capital city, chosen based on zones identified to be amassing waste, a few days prior to the event.
Aimed at minimizing and potentially eliminating the damage done to the environment & the streets, the project promotes a more hygiene-minded community. Collected waste will be weighed and the data collected to produce a monthly report.
As part of their journey to create a better community, Scouts first launched Saafu Malé Project on February 6, 2017, during which the Male’ Swimming Track and surrounding areas were cleaned and several awareness programs were organized. The initial success of the Saafu Male’ Project led to the scouts’ current partnership with the American Center Maldives, conducting Male’ Cleaning Activities on Fridays as well as advocacy programs scheduled to take place later in the year.
First Male’ Scout Group (Majeediyya Scout Group) was registered on 30th May 1956. Pioneers of Scouting in the Maldives, they have been working with Majeediyya School for the past 62 years to make the community a better place in hopes of “Creating a Better World”.
The organization will be conducting more advocacy programs for young people to encourage a plastic free environment. They also expressed hopes of partnering with relevant government authorities and several NGOs, Public and Private Sector Companies to showcase their project and establish more awareness campaigns around the capital region.
