Police on Tuesday declared that rumours of a plot to assassinate jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb in his cell are false.

Adheeb’s lawyer Mahfooz Saeed sent a letter to Maldives Police Service this Sunday, claiming to have received information of a plot to murder the former vice president in his cell at Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre. He requested Police to take all steps necessary to investigate the case and prevent such an occurrence.

However, spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shifan declared it a false report. He added that all inmates under Police custody are protected, assuring that Adheeb receives full security in his cell at the prison island of Dhoonidhoo.

“Adheeb is in Police custodial on request of the home ministry. We guarantee that no harm will come to him,” said Shifan.

The alleged plot to assassinate Adheeb has been brought to public attention in the wake of a photograph released to social media that depicts a person said to be Adheeb in his cell. However, the photograph does not clearly show the face of the man who is lying down, and Police declined to confirm the inmate’s identity as they stated that they are looking into the leak.
